Well, I wouldn't go too far and say that "whatever fells better" is what must north your decisions.

Diet is something very personal, indeed. I feel awesome eating meat, and have met many vegetarians for 5+ years that started eating meat again and all of them tell me they feel awesome (i.e. stronger, they recovery faster from workouts, have more energy in general), and not in a drug-numbing-awesome-way.

I wouldn't fuck a girl because that makes my testosterone levels higher, I'd do it because I like fucking girls. (And it would improve my life in some way - smoking wouldn't. So feeling awesome by fucking a girls has actually the purpose to push me higher in an area of my life.)

My ex gf became vegan when we were together. And now she is also a smoker AND alcoholic. And she says she's healthier than me, because I eat meat! LOL

This.

It all depends. What kind of meat? Turkey and chicken has lower fat and cholesterol that red meat (beef, pork). If you have high cholesterol it is probably wise not to eat fatty meals. Fish is high in omega three fatty acids (e.g. salmon), current claim is that omega three fatty acids are great for overall health. But disputes also exist...

Meat is simply mostly proteins. Your body (stomach) has to work hard to break down these proteins, which is good if you want to lose weight (e.g. compare to sweets or fats which are readily absorbed by your body without much effort). Meat, especially red one is great if you want to build and keep muscles. Other meat, such as turkey, contain tryptophan which is essential for production of serotonin, neurotransmitter in the brain associated with happiness.
Pure protein (meat) diet might be good for weight loss, the problem with high protein diet is that it is associated with Parkinson's disease.

People are foolish when they are trying to avoid fat and cholesterol by not eating meat. They think it will lower their overall cholesterol. The truth is, your body needs cholesterol to be healthy, it is an essential component, and if your body is deprived of it it will create its own anyway. You need cholesterol for example for healthy brain function and for testosterone (hormone). Basically you need some optimal levels, too little or too much of it is not good. Red meat also contains Vitamin B12 which can't be found in most vegetarian diets and needs to be supplemented.

Meat can be prepared in many different ways - cooked, fried, smoked, roasted, in oven or in direct fire... Usually you want to avoid any meal (not just meat) that is directly smoked, fried, prepared in high temperatures or in direct fire... These actually create a lot of carcinogens that are dangerous to human body. Best way is to cook/boil meals slowly and in lower temperatures for longer period of time. It is better to cook the meat than to consume it as raw. So you want cooked meals (not just meat), not fried, burnt or smoked.

You also want to avoid preservatives and processed meals overall; fresh is always better. Problem is also with "production", many times these animals (chicken, cows, pigs,...) are fed with hormones so they grow faster, and they are killed in highly stressful environment, which causes them to release additional hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol. The meat is then processed, added and presented to the consumers - who eats it with all these additional growth and stress hormones... Great, FDA approved - safe to consume.

Some fish can be full of mercury, which is a poison. You may not get poisoned by having a fish here and there, but if you eat it non-stop, year after year, it simply accumulates. But hey, as long as it is FDA approved...

Not to mentioned other foods, such as healthy vegetables. Many times they are spreyed with pesticides which is a poison that kills any living thing, and they are also fertilized by different chemicals which are also absorbed. As you know, chemicals are not good for your body. Let me guess - also approved by FDA?

Ok, lets don't even mention the chemicals in the air that you breath, chemicals released by factories into the rivers, chemicals that kills anything that lives in the water so you can safely drink it, chemicals that you use to wash your clothes in or brush your teeth with, chemicals that are added to foods to make them look fresh and colorful, chemicals that you swallow so you can be healthy again because they kill the bad bacteria in you, chemicals that you smoke...

Life is simply not healthy, but don't worry - eventually you'll get used to it :)

I fucked myself up phyisiologically, watched way too many movies about animals and farms, eventually never ate PORK again and never will, I'd die before. Nothing to do with health, though. Brains are amazing!

Been on both sides of coin. Stopped this "meat vs no-meat" nonsense a long time ago, going through many books / movies, researches.

Sticking with meat, simply because:

[*]meat makes me hornier(don't ask why, but it does)
[*]a lot of good proteins that help with bodybuilding and muscle maintenace, it was super hard to gain any mass without meat.
[*]well made meat tastes excellent

there's only one warning I can give y'all from my experiences..it's very easy to over-eat meat and you're probbaly doing it, just experiment. Everything in light moderation :)

ps. I eat and spice myself:

chicken breasts, turkey, beef stirloin, salmon. Other occurences of meat are rare.

Hey milfhuntah,

I think you bring up a good point, don't over do it (yes, I still eat meat from time to time because frankly I love the taste).

Also, I'm against being a raw vegan. It is hard to get your daily minerals and calories without cooked food like beans, rice, and potatoes (ONLY eat the colored ones like orange and purple). If you go vegan, don't make the mistake of going raw or you'll quickly go back to eating meat and fatty foods to get minerals and calories.

Here is a book some of you might find interesting: VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00 to Lose Weight and Restore Your Health

Anyway, wanted to give a link since I gave this as an argument in a prior post: Why Meat Is as Bad for Your Health as Smoking

And of course, a paleo supporter has given a response: Um, Actually, Eating Meat Isn't Even Remotely As Bad As Smoking

He gives the correlation is not necessarily causation argument. Which is true, but the problem here is when you have study after study after study finding the same correlation (that meat is bad for your health and longevity), even when controlling for different factors, it is not something to ignore. Professional researchers know about the correlation problem, that is why the studies are peer reviewed for flaws and alternative explanations and followup research and analysis is done. Furthermore, it is not simply correlation studies. We have found the specific chemicals and pathogens in meat that cause cancer, heart disease, and inflammation.

And we also have found the specific ingredients in protein-based plant foods (like beans) that are protective.

The studies he cites that are pro meat has the participants engaging in an exercise program while doing the study. And we all know how exercise can improve your overall health even if you are doing some unhealthy activities on the side (like drinking alcohol on the weekends). Or the numbers of participants in the studies he cites are very low like 15.

Overall, his counter arguments are pretty weak.

Thought this might be relevant.

Mother, health fanatic, and vegetarian of 8 years has been having a lot of health issues lately. She felt she was doing everything right by getting her nutrition through simply high protein, raw vegetables. She switched to Paleo a few months ago and many of her health problems have vanished (tumors in breasts haven't come back, stronger joint strength and recovery from injury, iron levels returned to normal).

By the way; linking to an article arguing a counter-point and then dismissing that article is a very typical straw man argument. You might want to keep those out when trying to sway an audience in an argument, and instead let them argue their point with their own supporting evidence, which is likely much more professional.

Hi Guys,

Diet and animal welfare
“People think of animals as if they were vegetables, and that is not right. We have to change the way people think about animals. I encourage the Tibetan people and all people to move toward a vegetarian diet that doesn’t cause suffering.”

—Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama advocates compassion for animals and frequently urges people to try vegetarianism or at least reduce their consumption of meat. In Tibet, where historically meat was the most common food, most monks historically have been omnivores, including the Dalai Lamas. The Fourteenth Dalai Lama was raised in a meat-eating family but converted to vegetarianism after arriving in India, where vegetables are much more easily available. He spent many years as a vegetarian, but after contracting Hepatitis in India and suffering from weakness, his doctors ordered him to eat meat on alternating days, which he did for several years. He tried switching back to a vegetarian diet, but once again returned to limited consumption of meat. This attracted public attention when, during a visit to the White House, he was offered a vegetarian menu but declined by replying, as he is known to do on occasion when dining in the company of non-vegetarians, "I'm a Tibetan monk, not a vegetarian".[61] His own home kitchen, however, is completely vegetarian.[62]

I don't know if this is related. This might help.
