Reading the recent article on Elliot Rodger got me thinking about myself.

Specifically, when I started to search online about the guy I came across this.
My Twisted World

He is very articulate and his writing is captivating, but I stopped reading once I saw it was 141 pages.

It is all about his past except for when he talks about the Day of Retribution. Ultimately, he let his past determine his future. He thought that his future had no promise...no opportunity.

His writing was all me, me, me, me, my past, my past, my past, my past...but the world owes you nothing and the past will control your future only if you let it.

I think I saw a little bit of this in my journal when I was talking about the past.

Am I a bitter about something, yes. Can I blame those things on other people, yes. But even if I could blame someone for something happening to me 100%...it doesn't matter.

When it comes to your past you have to frame it right to let go. Specifically you need two things.

  • 1.) The different road your life would have taken wouldn't have had the same experience or pleasures as the one you are on right now. The other life would have had pains you will never know with the life you have now. Sure, overall things might have been better in that other life but that doesn't matter because...

2.) Your future has virtually infinite possibilities. This means you can have a life as good or even better than your other life...if you choose to make it happen. Furthermore, you will be more appreciative when it comes to this better life.

That is it. Don't ever let your past control your thoughts or actions.

Make your future the one you want it to be.
