I was talking to my friend the other day about connection building vs info dumping in dating. She debated knowing everything about guys on dates makes her feel more comfortable. I brought up the concepts from GC and my experiences about revealing personal information. We are exchanging psychology studies with one another and I am trying to find one of Chase's articles on the subject. I remember reading one citing research articles on connection building vs info dumping. I've looked under all of Chase's article on deep-dive and connection building, but I cannot find it.

Anyone know the article?

Franco, those article are close to the idea about not talking about yourself and withholding information. We are getting closer!

Barry-

I'm missing the study on this one and haven't been able to find it for the life of me. I came across it back in 2007 or so - probably on Nature.com or ScientificAmerican.com - but wasn't saving research back then. It was a major "Aha!" moment for me when I read it... wish I could find it again. I've searched several times on regular search engines and academic research engines and not had any luck.

The problem with something like this is there are no good keywords that can make the study in question float to the top above all the other detritus. So when you search for "research more you share more connected you feel" or "research connection forming information" or "research relationship sharing emotion" you get all kinds of stuff, but not the study in question.

I've almost started wondering if I was deluding myself and this is some kind of urban legend-like thing now, kind of like how everybody and his brother claims to have seen that black-and-white picture of guys holding a dead pterodactyl/thunderbird up against a barn after shooting it but no one can ever remember where he saw it (best example of this I can think of). It was enough of a mental thunderclap for me when I came across it though that I know I saw it SOMEWHERE.

Should anyone come across it, in any event, I'd be eternally grateful to have a link to the URL and text of that research. I'd love to be able to quote the source instead of paraphrasing a study I remember but cannot find.

Zac-

That's the one that found that individuals form connections the more they share about themselves and feel the other person understands them (rather than finding out a lot about the other person).

Chase, thanks for looking into this! I remember reading one of your articles that listed the name of the study and author. I've been searching through your profile on the GC main site, but haven't found it yet. I can't remember the pictures in the article either.

Zac, cool articles, especially the "halo effect".

@ Zac-

Cool stuff - pretty amazing how much good research is already out there if you just poke around a bit.

@ Barry-

Can't say, but if it was on the site, it'll still be there (none of my 5 unpublished articles contain research, and everything else that's been published is still up).

Something I find useful when I'm trying to find a bit of research I've misplaced on the site is searching for anything with the word "journal" in it - just about every article with research mentions "The Journal of..." something or other, and few other non-research articles have the word "journal" in them, so this helps sift things a lot more easily.

Zac,

Loving how this had branched off. Really like how this is connecting to other studies as well. I have a lot of stuff to exchange with my friend now!

Still looking Chase, I'll try that tip to speed things along.
