I've been watching the show Mad Men, into the third season, and have been fascinated with the differences in culture and the traits of characters on the show compared to characters in shows set in modern day. They are all much more dominant, masculine, go-getters- even the less successful characters. This made me think of Chase's points on the decline of masculinity and testosterone in the men of the west in the past 50 years. Does anyone watch the show or have any thoughts on this? It really jumped out at me. Don Draper is also amazing, and I would love to hear peoples' thoughts on his game. I feel like something can really be learned from watching the men on the show- attitudes, nonverbals, etc. and feel as if they all are much manlier than many men nowadays. I find very few dominant, masculine men like those on the show in my day to day life.

I love that show. But it's an era long gone, where men where men and women were women, little of the b.s from today. Boys today get raised by weak males and "strong" mothers, everything is askew. Back when Don was a child you worked when you were a kid and respected your elders or else. The men followed what was expected of them which took effort and dedication to earn a living and support a family, which in turn build character and respect from other men. Life made you tough, strong, and focused. Compare any kid from suburbia today from a kid from the 50's or 30's and you would see the difference in character and mentality. Most boys in the West today are weak in comparison, look into their eyes and you will see an innocence or a "softness" that kids in other countries do not have. They are spoiled and feel entitled to something that does not belong to them. Don is self made man who follows what a man should be doing in life, which is to become the very best he could be in what he is good at, which for him is advertising.

But Don inside is a mess. He will never be happy, he is haunted by the past and by his bad choices and mistakes. His success is bittersweet always falling short of what he thinks it should be. He, as a person, is more myth than fact since on the outside everything is perfect (even looks wise) but how many men have it "all"? Even superstars lack something; either game, brains, or balls. He is society's "perfect" man, but perfect doesn't exist, always a catch. His game is a mixture of aloof/charming asshole. But most of the women hit on him first, another catch that rarely happens in real life, especially in the manner they portray it on t.v. It happens, sure but not every single time. Separate fact from fiction. Overall, it's a great show for learning non verbals and some lines and moves from Don but it's not a substitute to how the real world today works.

Not necessarily - they were suppressed, and now we're the men paying the price to their over-reaction.

There's a weakness in Don too. He severely dropped in my estimation on a number of occasions. He seemed a lot more like a sociopath, after seeing the way he treated his brother. If it was really necessary for Don to keep him out of his life (which I assume it wasn't), then he could have done it with a bit more grace. He had no reason not to trust his brother. The poor brother probably thought that Don couldn't stand the sight of him.

I was also amused by how easily frightened he was by Pete Campbell's threat. He was willingly to flee the country and dessert his family, just in case someone found out he'd some silly fake name.

I don't know if there's a lot to be learned from him. It's just basically based around Don's delayed responses to women's questions... it gets old. In reality anyone would just be spoken over if they took that long to respond.
