Make friends at parties and all

So, last week I was at a party with a friend of mine. Suddenly a couple of people come, who are friends of my friend. They start talking and all and, since its all stories about someone or something that I have nothing to do, I don't really say much. Just the occasional laugh or smile when they smile, like Im completely understanding everything. And then I start to zone out and think about other stuff. All in all, I just come across as the quiet guy, AND I DONT WANT TO.

What do you usually do when something like this happens? It's not like I want to take control of the group, I just dont want to come across as the quiet guy to begin with
