Here is a Chinese proverb:
One day, a young man was sitting very still by the river, with eyes closed, doing breathing exercise.
A Taoist happened to walk by, and saw the man. He went over and asked: "what are you doing sir?"
The young man opened his eyes and replied: "Obviously I am meditating.."
The Taoist then sat by that young man, picked up a flat piece of stone, and started rubbing the surface of the stone.
The young man saw what he was doing and asked: "What are you doing?"
The Taoist replied: "Obviously I am polishing this piece of stone.."
"Nonsense! You can't polish that dirty stone by simply rubbing it alone!" Said the young man.
The Taoist looked at the young man, and said: "Indeed... just like this stone, one does not just sit still and call it meditating.."
