Nice move: "somewhat 'abashed' expression (like I knew it was slightly embarrassing but I just couldn't miss the chance), and I dipped my head as she looked at me".What I did and it seemed to work reasonably well was to have a combination of effusive positivity and a somewhat 'abashed' expression (like I knew it was slightly embarrassing but I just couldn't miss the chance), and I dipped my head as she looked at me. Dashing, charming, a bit awkward but who cares?
What you did just there, by the sound of it, was a male form of the classic flirting smile. This, obviously in a male way, is the one that scientists at the University of Kansas have written about from the more traditional vantage-point of girls doing it because it's one of the bloody few things that men (knuckle-dragging bunch that we are...) can actually spot and understand:
Identifying a Facial Expression of Flirtation and Its Effect on Men
Internal states may be conveyed to others nonverbally through facial expression. We investigated the existence of a particular facial cue that may be effectively used by women to indicate interest ...

I personally do employ this because I know that women also know exactly what it is and, because women know that it's far more often women who use it, they are absolutely likely to be both amused and flattered.
I have. They are great bedfellows and have a lot of grounded humour, in my experience. A charming guy like you...? You'd be doing her a very welcome favour. (Again, not necessarily this particular case, but please don't rule out the whole category. There are women out there who need our help!)I've never had a married woman. It's not something I aspire to,
