To OP: I actually do not know lol. I know one of them is related to how many likes your posts have receved. However, this system is flawed since those who are active in the chat-room have very high scores, since one can like a single chat-message. Rank is basically the only "somewhat" legit denominator to determine a poster's skill-level. I say somewhat, since ranks are set manually by the staff and it depends on people's posting activity, which means that sometimes, a low ranked posters may be very knowledgeable but inactive, hence it oftentimes passes the staff's radar. However, highly ranked members are highly ranked for a reason (the top 2 ranks are usually hard to acquire and are usually set as a result of deliberation between staff members). Also lower ranked members can also make very great posts, so at the end of the day, you should have an open mind and judge for yourself (if the post is crap, you can be sure veteran members will jump in and point it out! - however when it comes to questions, you will never be judged - few questions are considered dumb and sometimes beginner questions lead to fantastic discussions!)

@Chase

Also Chase, if I move this to the community Board, will OP be able to see the thread and respond to it?

Yeah, "reaction score" almost seems like a chat popularity contest. Whoever's on chat the most getting upvoted the most has the highest score there...

Yes, he will be able to.

I agree, that should not be contributing to use score. Makes the user score metric a weird jumble of things.

I just disabled liking of messages in chat. Though maybe there's a way to leave that enabled but separate out the chat likes from the regular "reaction score"... I'll ask Haseeb.

Hi Chase,

If there's a way to enable the reactions without affecting the reaction score, I think that'd be pretty welcome by the guys in the chat based on what I've read.

I find the chat reactions are clean, easy ways to acknowledge chat messages without making the chat too busy with written-out acknowledgements. I think it also makes guys feel more involved and likely to keep interacting.

I wouldn't mind it disabled on regular forum. It kinda blows when you post a giant instructional thing and 10 people feel as if hitting thumbs up is some pat on the head. I guess it's the way of social media now so people will demand it. But a like or a smiley or whatever to me is not stimulating to discussion in any way. I think not speaking up and saying what you want, unless it's loud negativity, never complimenting a post etc, is more of a guy keeping himself in a cage socially, even at a digital level. Gonna like someones long post, just to add to the discussion, doesn't hurt to type out a short "why" of it, just saying. Have fallen into lazy days of it myself.

Yeah in chat typing an "lol" every time someone makes a mildly amusing observation would get tedious (know it did on MASF) the thumbs up or laugh emoji is more utility there. I'm sure it's fairly offensive to those who have a post by post more "organic" rank getting blown away by chat popularity/fun/goofing around that's not always even game talk. Which it has to be to stay active, i've seen chats that are strict on topic only, and they die fast. It does artificially inflate rank based on non forum topic advice or help though.

No dog in the fight myself. I'll drop right off there cause i'm barely around, but rightly so, one chat session I might climb 300 etc, cause I type fast.

All right, so it sounds like:

  • Forum-only guys: "WTF are these chat guys doing at the top of the points!"
  • Chat-guys: "Please leave us our reactions so we don't clog the chat with a million LOLs!"

I would think there's a way to leave the reactions on without having that contribute to the user score.

Will try to get that fixed for you guys ASAP.

even simpler solution

hide reaction scores and points.

Value on this forum aint even tied to reactions. Before this post no one cared and guess what it still aint running shit

if you write good shit people notice it and go "hey that's some good shit."

they aren't going to go

"Well Dowhatworks had a good post but Train has the most reactions so let me ask train first if DWW writeup is any good"

I say this as the man with the second highest score ;)

hold your applause I know

I'm a celebrity

my dick touches the water in the toilet

yep that's me

just hide reaction scores and points but keep the function

Yeah 5th here and give no fucks, if programming is easier to just not have it, it's beneath me. Masf was probably peak of community and I was making more money than anyone I ever met in my life and had more reputation online than ever in my life. Don't remember a similar feature granting me any favor in any way. No idea if it even get's looked at by new people.

when I first started and in general frequenting this board even though I am the second highest reaction score on the board I didn't.

I usually wake up and acknowledge I have the 2nd highest reaction score then from there I give it no thought and spend most of my time between bookmarked posts, new posts, and chat giving no further thought I'm the 2nd highest reaction score.

I also have never been reached out for an article (what the hell is up with that), received no dm's of admiration, and women don't care when I mention I am the 2nd highest reaction score spezzaturically

So being the 2nd highest reaction score as you can tell is a lot of clout and this feature is the bedrock of the community
(^ joking...gotta make that obvious cause I'm the 2nd highest reaction score and my words carry at least the 2nd highest power around here)

the right date makes getting her back home a piece of cake

The different forums i been part of chat did not have votes or pms and i was both a chat and forum guy, super popular in both..if there is a way to separate them... the thing us newer guys and lurkers will get confused as the op...other veterans or naturals that join new will get confused to there is no reason chase, teevester, gun, karea etc. Should be displayed lower than dudes that have 0 biz being were they are due to chats and pms, no offense to anybody.... has nothing to do with dhving to other guys or women has to do with the integrity of the forum... i also thing it will encourage more participation in the actual forum.

Personally I don't go by the reaction score. Only metric I go by is post content, general user presence, and rank.

I think 90% of guys (newbs included) aren't focusing on the reaction scores.

Also, one has to go out of their way to look at the reactions rankings and I doubt they're going "Bootylover69 has 1K higher reaction score. He's the MVP and not ChazDickdick." Everyone knows who the veterans are if they stay on here long enough.

I'd be onboard with just disabling public display of the reaction scores but still letting the users know their posts are acknowledged to encourage further engagement. And then letting the tribal ranks speak for themselves.

Also, may be worth polling the new users or newbs to see if they're truly being confused. My guess this was a non-issue to begin with because new users go by the tribal ranks.
