Sup, guys. So I just went to one of my friend's house- (he's a rapper you see) to chill around and do some guy talk. At one point when we were talking he came up saying to me - Next time you go downtown, call me so I can join you- gonna buy some really neat clothing. By that he meant his style- Baggy shirts, caps, shorts, chains- your typical MC.
Now this got me puzzled cuz it goes agaisnt almost everything Chase wrote on his article on Fashion. So can you guys tell me what you think on the general "gangsta" style of the rapper and its effectiveness?

Hadrian,

This is probably more about congruency than anything else. Since the guy IS a rapper, and people go to see him perform, then they are going to be expecting him to wear "rapper" attire (a.k.a. baggy clothing, chains, caps, etc). But most of his pre-selection and attraction from women isn't going to come from his clothing but rather his social status; if he's a rapper performing at a venue where people are there to see him, then naturally he is going to be the highest social status person in that building, and girls are going to throw themselves at him.

But if you're just a casual guy wearing rapper attire going just about anywhere else, then you're just going to appear somewhat "thug-like," and the majority of high quality women are put off by this. Unless you're really into ghetto chicks, I would avoid this at all costs.

If you happen to be AT the venue WITH the rapper though (and maybe part of his backstage "posse"), then you can get away with wearing that attire since your social status is automatically elevated by being part of his crew, and at that point, it's more congruent for you to be wearing something along the lines of what he's wearing since you're mobbing with him.

So basically I'd say, if you want to wear some of his clothing, I would only wear it if (1) you're comfortable with it and it fits your personality and (2) you're rolling out with him to the venue he's performing at. Other than that, you're better off reading the articles written by Darius on this website for tips on good fashion.

Hope that helps!

I think this is a great example of good hip hop style that adheres to GC's advice.

I always liked red and remember an article somewhere on GC saying that red is a great color.
I think it cited a study saying you are perceived as higher value wearing red and teams wearing red win more.

Also a jacket also is a better look than just the Tshirt for similar reasons (perhaps boosting shoulder to hip ratio)

Being Twins, its interesting to note that my eyes were drawn to the guy in the red jacket, since they have for the most part similar body language and structure.
