Guys,

I’ll keep it brief but I have a question on dealing with massive state drops while out and about.

I tried thinking of an analogy and the one most becoming is that of a surfer.

If you could imagine yourself as a surfer, jogging across the sand feeling the grainy texture beneath your feet, you’re looking straight ahead with the oceans deep blue water stretching across the horizon, the water is calm, you’re feeling confident, excited even, you jump in.


Paddling out in glee and confidence, you catch a small wave, you’re doing tricks you’re showboating, it feels good. You’re focused riding the good feelings as all things should be.

But suddenly

like a linebacker blindsiding a quarterback, you’re trucked! By a sudden wave. Your heart drops and butterflies rush into your stomach. Knocked off your board and drug down into the deep blue with water rushing up your nose.

It’s painful, it’s unexpected, like a sudden call about your cat clawing up your couch and now you need a new one.

It’s painful it’s unexpected like walking in the park and getting stung up by a swarm of hornets.

Despite this you remain poised, afterall you can’t win if there’s no losses, you climb back on your board and bystanders agree that the wave really did come out of nowhere. This reassures you.

Yet. You can’t surf the next wave. You think “that was odd that was supposed to be easy”. Suddenly you can’t maintain your balance, better yet you can’t even stand on your board, better than that you forget how to float, then you forget how to swim, you’re drowning now.

You think “impossible! these are all things that I know well” you understand consciously that your confidence has been shook but despite this it is as if emotionally you are still reliving the crushing wave.

Despite ignoring these emotions you can’t seem to regain your footing, you stick it out and eventually learn how to paddle again until it’s time to go home.

Brutalized, and confused you paddle home never really being able to stand on your board again. Tomorrow I guess.

How does one deal with these wild card unforeseen emotionally blindsiding situations. The ones where your momentum gets sapped clean out.

I am not one who expects to never lose, but when the loss is from an unanticipated angle I am admittedly affected.

I tend to throw myself at problems and rebel against my emotions, but i’ve often done this to no avail going home empty handed.

I ponder if the effort used trying to swim against the current could have been better used going to the drawing board or regaining my composure elsewhere.

In social situations, I find this mainly curtails your vibe (rightly so because the mood is ruined). And like a domino effect it exes out your personal charisma (whatever that means for you), as well as your energy levels which means you can’t “bring the energy”.

It’s definitely a cat and dog fight at that point because it’s like your brain is gassed, and you can’t think of how to course. Hence the “forgetting how to swim”, sometimes when this happens I literally forget how to hold a simple conversation.
