I've heard this commencement speech many times and love it even more every time. The beauty and the sadness of it, however, is practicing it. Nevermind, it's only beauty - that free will to do whatever we like with knowledge, that's fucking beautiful. It's sad that the speaker, David Foster Wallace, did not persevere to the end with this wisdom and instead ended his own life. His death, then, reminds us that even one with such a firm grasp on a profound wisdom can fail to diligently practice it.
But that just means it's hard, not impossible. We're only fucked if we fuck ourselves.
