Hey guys,

I remember a thread about this a few months ago, but can't really seem to find it anymore...
It's kind of a niche question and not terribly important, but I still wonder from time to time:

1) To which extent do you guys use emoticons in your texting? None whatsoever? Only certain ones?

2) How does that vary from girls you've just met on the street to female friends?

Cheers!

Laja,

I use them quite often, actually. I generally stick to the basic ones, which for me are: :) (happy face), :( (sad face), ;) (winky face), and :/ (that sucks) face. I'll occasionally use the :p (funny thing happened) face once in awhile. The purpose of this is that it helps set the tone of your text, which can sometimes be difficult to decipher for a girl if it has a very neutral tone from it by itself. While you might say something that you mean to be funny/witty, it may not come across that way to the girl if she doesn't already know your personality, so a smiley/winky face, for example, will help her determine that.

I'd say I use about 1 emoticon per every 2.5 texts on average, so it's pretty frequent. You don't have to do the same, but it should give you an idea of what works.

2) How does that vary from girls you've just met on the street to female friends?

It doesn't differ at all for me. I'm usually very friendly and (sometimes) funny over text with the women I've just met, which is exactly the way I continue to be with them in future texting (or with long-time female friends). I'll tend to probably use the "winky" face the most when I'm first interacting with a girl I'm interested in because it's somewhat of a "flirty" face, and it usually suits the tone of my texts if I'm being flirty.
