While relating the ordeal, I made sure I started with "this part where you guys live is terrible...", so I was indirectly blaming her... this made her empathise with me more. I then tell her that the money I and my friend have is very limited, she understands. I don't know if this was the best strategy to handle the situation as I haven't had to deal with dates before, but it was the best I could come up with.
