I was teaching a watersports activity this weekend, and a girl and guy on fancy bicycles stopped near me as I stood on the waterfront. She approached me and said:
Her: Are you one of the watersports guys?
Me: yes!
Her: This may seem weird, but can I take a picture with you?
Me: Sure!
Her: (kinda nervous and trying to explain herself) I bet this doesn't happen to you every day.... I just think this is so cool.
Me: haha, it's awesome, I love it.
Her: Are you cold?
Me: no, I'm toasty.
Her: yeah, you look kinda hot in that wetsuit
Me: haha, thanks
Her: but what about your hands? (grabs my hand momentarily) Oh, they ARE cold!
Me: I didn't even notice, lol, just having too much fun
Her: (hands her phone to the guy) ok, let's have the picture!
So we smile & the guy takes the picture. She puts her phone away, and I think "Shit, I've missed my window!"
Her: so what do you do when you aren't here?
Me: I do^&$.
Her: Oh, I see, so that's just a front for you to come goof off
Me: absolutely! lol
Her: just take their money and run!
Me: lol. (Suddenly decide to act) Hey, can I give you my number so we can catch up later?
Her: sure, as long as I get to come have an awesome adventure with you!
Me: let's do it! (I tell her my number & double-check it. My students start needing help, so I have to cut the conversation to a close)
Her: ok, I'll text you the picture! bye!
I get to my phone, and sure enough, there it is! We start texting on Sunday night:
Me: We look great together Let me know if there's an evening this week where we could meet up and get properly introduced.
Her: that would be great! What are you up to on Wedn or Tue?
Me: Let's do Wedn, I have another lesson on Tues nite.
Me: (Tues morning, haven't hear from her) how about 8pm at [bar] tomorrow?
Her:Aww shot, I just made plans for tomorrow nite.
Her: What about Thursday?
Me: Thursday works as well.
Her:Let's do Thursday! Anytime after 6 works for me!
Me:Ok, so 8 at bar then.
Her: Should I wear my wetsuit?
Me: Depends on how wet you think I'm going to get you. If you do wear it, you should also bring fins and a snorkel, we could look for sunken treasure later.
Me: (5min later) Hey, can we make it 8:30 instead? I forgot about a meeting.
Me: (Thurs morning) [Her name], how does 8:30 tonight work? Let me know.
Her: Hey Lucas, I think this ship has sailed!
So there you go. Lesson: don't try to start anything over text, just get to the meeting. Dammit.
