I like Jay Samit's idea for idea sourcing.
Jay Samit is a former executive VP of Sony Connect (among other notable titles/positions). What he recommends wanna be entrepreneurs to do is write a list of 3 things that happened to them, situations that occurred, and less than perfect product experiences they run into every day for 30 days (thus you'll have 90 new business ideas by the end of the exercise). These can be anything and ranging from large (i.e. I hate traffic on the interstate lets invent a hyperloop to travel from LA to NY in an hour) to small (i.e. there are no good affiliate websites for chew-able gluten free Paleo dog treats let me create a informative affiliate website).
Then once you have the 90 ideas pick out your 2-4 favorite ideas and test the market as quick as possible for each of the ideas and go with the one that you get the best reception to or are the most passionate about (as long as that ideas still gets reception).
