I don't believe that someone else can make us happy but Can anyone with experience of being in a long term relationship explain what you feel with a woman you were in love with and the effect it had on your life?

Why is it that relationships with the opposite sex cannot fulfill our live and truly make us happy? If women don't have the ability to make us happy what role do they play in our life?

Rule #1 You are responsible for your own happiness.
Rule #2 Someone can not make you feel badly about yourself without your permission

If someone in your life makes you happy, then cherish and nurture that relationship. Some people get that from a pet since they can't handle investing emotionally in another person.
The love of a woman can make you take risks and challenges in other aspects of our life because of the feeling that we will still be loved and respected even if that risk doesn't work out. I think that is also the function of our relationships with our parents and siblings if there is not the life partner.

For me personally, love is forever. There are some girls where I can feel their spiritual presence despite being 3000 miles away in another state. It's very empowering to know someone special has such strong feelings about you. I love women and everything about them(their shoes, their hair, their voice..etc) and I'm sincere about it. Women can feel when you're like that. Now that being said, I will declare that whatever I feel and think does not apply to other guys. I know guys whose main priority is their golf game or making several million dollars tax free and building their mansion in Newport Beach, California. Chase put up a statistic where there is an excess of single guys to single girls in most parts of the United States, but I doubt all the single men are actively seeking life mates. What mom told you about there's someone for anyone is half B.S. In a pool of 10 girls, Chase could get most of them if he played his cards right and nine of the guys with no game would get none. Some of those guys may not be interested in love to begin with. Guys need to figure out what they want and how to achieve it. If you're trying to find a romantic partner because the culture says you should and that's not something that makes you happy, then you shouldn't pursue it.

TwoRocky explains it well; you are responsible for your own happiness because you have free will in your life.

No man is an island. Women don't make me happy but the nature of sharing an experience with somebody allows me to experience it more deeply if it's with somebody I love or care about. I'm content to watch a movie alone but when you add a girl that I love or care about to the mix then the experience is amplified.

Basically, we alone make ourselves happy and when you're surrounded by amazing people (which is personally subjective) then that happiness is amplified. I don't need women in my life but I cannot deny that having them around gives me another excuse to be zestful about life =P

I like to relate it to the stock market. You need a diverse portfolio to be successful(friends, hobbies, career, women), the more you have in your portfolio the easier it is to handle one that becomes a problem. If you find a really good one it will 100% enhance your life, but life isn't over if you lose it. You have 4-6 others on the back burner just in case.

The more positive stocks you have in your life the more stable you are overall.

It's why some guys that spend so much energy on pick-up have such emotional upheaval when they run into girl problems. Not enough diversification of their interests.
