I have always had more success hanging out with girls as opposed to having a wingman. A few years ago, when I rolled with a group of guys, they would never approach girls. They would just talk to the friends after I opened the group up or try to steal the one I talked to. One of my friends actually met his wife through me opening a group up. I had another friend, who i was wingmanning, I opened the group up and had to hang out all night b/c he was so slow. I ended up getting pretty drunk and hooking up with her chubby friend, woke up next morning and he was nowhere to be found. :\
I have a few girls that I roll with now. They send single ladies my way too, which is nice. I just had some bad experiences with guy friends before. I'm really selective who and when I hang out with, when it comes to guys now.
