The weather was crap today in Minnesota, but against my better judgement, I went out anyway to practice my conversational skills. It started really slow, and I was afraid I would have to report getting nothing, but as it turns out, I'm actually really glad I chose to dress myself up and get out there in the misty cold rain that reminded me of Seattle.
Once again, my memory isn't the best because of the length and number of conversations I had.
Woman #1: After going into H&M very quickly, shivering, I looked around to find people, but didn't see anyone. This was the place I got the number yesterday, so I had high hopes though. I went to buy a vest, and while I was waiting in line, I spotted a woman with the most awesome hair I had ever seen, and so I got out of line to let her know my thoughts.
Me: "I didn't want to be one of those guys who stared at you from a distance and didn't even come by to tell you how great you looked. I'm AP, and I think you look stunning!"
Her: "Oh thank you! I'm (name)!"
Me: "So what are you doing here.. Besides talking with an awesome guys of course."
Her: "Haha, I'm just shopping around!"
Me: "Wait, before I continue.. How old are you?"
Her: "I'm thirty!"
Me: "REALLY? Wow, you honestly look like someone more around my age."
Her: "Yeah, plus I live with my boyfriend. I can still talk to you though!"
Me: "So what do you do for a living?"
Her: "I do hair and make-up in Bloomington."
Me: "Huh.. You're the first person I've met in the hair business.. That means your really into fashion and art right?"
Her: "Well, I try to be, haha! Not today though anyway."
Me: "Shit... If you're dressed that nice on a lazy day, I'm curious to see what you put on when you're dressed to kill!"
This is when the conversation stagnated.. I tried to lead it to how she got into hair and makeup and if she had the artist personality, but I never got anything that I could use to continue the conversation, so I we ended up parting ways and I went to pay for my vest again.
Girl #1 I went shop to shop trying to find girls to approach, but the place was scarcer than usual. I had various conversations with the hired guns at the shops, but didn't dare hit on them so I could continue using their place as a hunting ground. Eventually, I gave up and settled on trying to pick up a girl with pink hair I had met previously while walking by, but decided against trying anything.
Me: "You know, you've got the most creative hair I've ever seen! I'm AP, what's your name?"
Her: "Haha, thank you! I'm (name)"
Me: "How old are you?"
Her: "17."
Me: "Really? Me too! What school do you go to then?"
Her: "The Math and Science Academy."
Me: "I didn't even know one existed! Haha, does that mean you plan on going into a math or science major."
Her: "I guess so.. I mean, that's kinda what everyone at the school does when they graduate."
Me: "That's no reason to decide a career.. Haha, I mean, you're your own person, and you can be whatever you want to be... To be honest, you seemed to me more like an art person with that hair."
Her: "Haha, I'm actually a little bit of both!"
Me: "Cool! So am I! What kind do you tend to create? Pictures, photography, music...?"
Her: "Um.. I play guitar!"
Me: "Really? I do too! Can I see your hand?" *I felt her fingers for callouses that guitar players receive.*
Her: "I just took off the callouses actually."
Me: "Keeping your hands soft for someone special huh?"
Her: "Hahahahaha! No! It's not like that!"
Me: "Why not? I know I love soft hands. How long have you been playing?"
Her: "Not too long.. About 3 years."
Me: "Eight for me.. Though my progress stopped after I quit lessons three years ago."
Her: "Wow, that's really long! My boyfriend played for seven though. Me and him play together a lot."
I continued conversing with the girl anyway, planning on asking for her number at the end so we could be friends. The conversation shifted from music, to why she didn't plan on joining that industry. After she asked me what I wanted to do, and I launched my monologue about wanting to be a doctor that would change the medical system, I borrowed Artisan's line.
Me: "So now that I'm done with this whole monologue, it's your turn. Tell me something unique about you."
Before she could answer, her manager said something, and she ended up disappearing somewhere in the back. I waited for a while for her to come back so we could exchange numbers, but I grew impatient.. Especially because she wasn't single, so I headed out. I'll ask later.
Girl #2: This one was at DSW browsing alone. This conversation was kind of painful.
Me: "I didn't want to be one of those guys who just let you walk by without letting you know how great you look.. I'm AP, you look amazing!"
Her: "Oh thanks! I'm (name)"
Me: "So what are you doing here? You know, besides flirting with an awesome guy?"
Her: "I'm just shopping around."
Me: "For any event specifically?"
Her: "No."
Me: "Wait. Before I continue, how old are you?"
Her: "I'm 13."
Me: "Wow, really? I'm 17!"
Her: "Yeah, I look a lot older than I am don't I?"
Me: "Yeah, you look pretty enough to be someone my age!" (Not the best answer, but I was improvising.)
Her: "Thanks!"
Me: "What school do you go to?"
Her: "Um... I don't think I should say.."
Me: "Why not? I go to Tartan... So anyway, tell me something awesome about you! I'm totally putting you on the spot."
Her: "Um.. I play volleyball.. and I dance.."
Me: "Oh, cool! What kind of dance?"
Her: "Hip-hop"
Me: "Can you do body rolls?"
Her: "Haha, yes."
Me: "I've been trying to learn hip-hop dancing on youtube so I wouldn't look completely stiff on the dancefloor.. I've actually been looking for a teacher, but for now, I'm stuck with beginner videos."
Her: "Haha"
Me: "Do you do any latin dancing?"
Her: "No."
Me: "I know some basics of that too."
Thankfully, her mom called her phone and she had to go. I was losing threads to talk about, so I was pretty thankful that it happened.
---
Potential Success #1: I drove to my old hunting grounds after dropping my mom off and as I was walking through the door, a gorgeous Latina walked out. After I passed her, I called back and told her how great she looked. She's the first walking girl who was walking fast to actually stop when I opened her.
Me: "I didn't want to be one of those guys that just let you walk past me without telling you how great you looked. You look absolutely adorable! I'm AP!"
Her: "Aww, thank you! I'm (name)"
Me: "Did you just come in for the starbucks or something?" *gesturing to the coffee in her hands*
Her: "No, I actually work at Barnes & Nobles and now I'm off haha!"
Me: "Really? Wait.. Before I continue, how old are you?"
Her: "I'm 19."
Me: "So that means you're still in school then huh?"
Her: "No.. Well, yeah, but college."
Me: "For what major?"
Her: "I don't know, I'm still indecisive! Haha!"
Me: "Well, you're young and attractive, so you've got plenty of time!"
Her: "Haha! Thank you!"
Me: "Not just as a pretty girl either. Look at you! *gesturing to her clothes* You're a pimp! Well, if you could have any job in the world, what would it be? I know I'd like to be a rock star."
Her: "Haha, rockstar.. I don't know.. I'm so indecisive! Haha, I'd need them to hire me first!"
Me: "Well all you'd have to do is give the manager a wink and a smile and you'd be in for sure."
Her: "Haha, yeah, I wish it worked that way. My boyfriend is waiting for me though, so I have to get going!"
Me: "Oh, okay! I wouldn't want to delay you."
Her: "Thanks for the compliment though!"
Me: "Wait.. I know you said you had a boyfriend, but I think you're really cool and I would like to get to know you better. Do you think we could exchange numbers?"
Her: "Um... Could you give me yours?"
Me: "Why?"
Her: "Well, I don't feel comfortable giving you mine just yet. I'll text you though!"
Me: "Pinky swear?"
Her: "Haha, yes!"
We pinky swore, I gave her my number, and hugged her goodbye. Normally I'd write off one of these as a girl trying to let me off nicely, but hey... pinky swear is some powerful shit.
Girl #3: When you approach, the best thing that can happen is getting a date, and the worst is that you get a funny story to tell. This is one I'll probably tell my bros and laugh about it. This one was shopping with her sister.
Me: "I didn't want to be one of those guys that walked right past you without telling you how great you looked. I'm AP! What's your name?"
Her: "Thank you! I'm (name)"
Me: *turning to the sister* "Are you her sister? Hi, I'm AP! I won't be long, I promise!"
Sister: "How old are you?"
Me: "17?"
Sister: "She's eleven. *tugs away sister* Let's go."
Whoops.
Success #1: I saw a gorgeous blonde at a piercing shop with her friend. They were at the front desk, so I hesitated at first to approach, but I went anyway.
Me: "I didn't want to be one of those guys that just walked past without telling you how great you looked. I'm AP, and I think you look amazing!"
Her: "Oh my god! Thank you! I'm Morgan!"
Me: "Wait.. Before I continue, how old are you?"
Her: "18. How old are you?"
Me: "I'm 18 too! Barely legal!"
Her: "Haha!"
Friend: "Hi!"
Me: "Hi there! I'm AP, are you two friends?"
Friend: "Yeah!"
Me: "Sorry if I'm interrupting anything between you two!"
Friend: "No you're fine! Just keep talking to her and forget about me!"
Me: "So 18 huh.. That means you're still in school. What are you planning on majoring in?"
Her: "I want to be a medical coder."
Me: "Oh, so you're into the medical field too huh?"
Her: "Um sorta. I'm just going to be the one in the back entering in the information, and that kind of stuff!"
Me: "Huh.. that's interesting... Why coder then? Why not medical doctor or nurse?"
Her: "I'm terrified of blood! Haha, what about you? You're into the medical field?"
And so my monologue about being the doctor that changed the medical field began. At the end..
Me: "So now that I've given you all that, it's your turn. Tell me something awesome about you!"
Her: "Umm... I don't know.. *turns to her friend* What's something awesome about me?"
Friend: "Haha, um.. She plays volleyball.. She gets scared easily.."
Her: "No I don't!"
Me: "So does that mean I'm scaring you?"
Her: "No, you're fine! Haha! (name of friend)!"
Friend: "I'm trying to keep it positive! Haha, let's see.."
Me: "Everyone's got something special about them."
The woman about to do her piercing came up and asked if I was here for anything. When I told her I was just talking to her customer, she said as long as I wasn't harassing her, I was fine.
Me: "No, don't worry! I'm not bothering you, am I?"
Her: "No, he's not."
She was still trying to think of something when it was time for her to get the piercing.
Me: "Okay, well I think you're a really cool person, and I'd really like to see you again. Do you think we could-"
Her: "Yeah! We can exchange numbers!"
Me: "Perfect! What's your number... And when do you think we might be able to meet up?"
Her: "I'm not sure yet.. Just text me and I'll let you know!"
So I asked for her name one last time before I headed out and kissed her hand after I shook it one more time, wishing her good luck. This one has texted me back, and we're currently working on logistics.
Girl #4: I saw this one as she was coming up the elevator as I was coming down. I opened normally, but she was catching up with family and her boyfriend, so the conversation didn't last.
Girl #5: This one was sitting on a couch alone and looking glum, so I went over, sat down and opened.
Me: "You look a little sad. Something wrong?"
She talked about how she had lost her friend and was hoping that he got her message, but she was otherwise stranded at the mall. We introduced ourselves, but after I asked her age, and she asked mine, she told me she wasn't interested in younger guys.. At the very least barely legal was too young.. But then she said it also depended on if they could drive. When I told her I could drive, she asked if I could take her home, and I saw this as an instant date opportunity, so I took it.
We talked on the way out, but before I could get to know her, her friend came to retrieve her. I left the place anyway, because I thought I saw the other two girls and didn't want to be seen doing anything risky that might hurt my chances, because I had a really good feeling about that girl.
Things I did well:
1) I'm not cracking under pressure and stopping the conversation prematurely
2) I'm getting far more comfortable making conversation from nothing
3) My conversations are getting deeper and more personal
4) My approach anxiety is now almost non-existant.. In fact, I look forward to each one.
Things I could improve on:
1) Conversation still needs work
2) I need more infield practice with people I wouldn't normally relate with
3) I need to learn to tell a girl's age better
Once again, my memory isn't the best because of the length and number of conversations I had.
