Need guidance for being accepted among other men

I'm currently in the army, for a couple months. Most men around me are farmers, construction workers, firemen (all very physical and masculine jobs) from smaller cities with little chance for advanced education. In an environment such as this one, students or people from big cities are usually looked down on.

How does a guy from a completely different background befriend such people, work with them, and avoid being an outcast?

I serve in USAR (Urban search and Rescue) as conscription in Asia for two years. I was in the support unit. For this type of places, it is more of "get in line and earn your place". Basically, know how to protect yourself and expect people 'like them' to put shit on you.

And slowly work through their "barrier of entry". Don't stir the pot too much. Just be chill and do your work/job.

So if they're druggy, we have to take drugs to really be truly bonded with them?
That's tough for me, but I want to be friends with all kinds of people
