Hey dudes!
Check it out. I did some approaches, and I didn't wuss out once!
I only did 3 because I've got some rules.
Anyway, on with the story.
The hero: 5ft 6, neatly trimmed beard, fancy designer specs, jeans, red t-shirt (I know about red stuff), 42 yo (looks more like 35 though), navy jacket, grey sneakers, cologne of the day is Dior Savauge EDT (Pretty mainstream I know, but I've got a bottle and need to use it up)
The scene: Overcast Saturday afternoon in Edinburgh (AKA Auld Reekie, and The Athens of the North). It might rain.
Soundtrack: The new Iron Maiden album, Senjutsu (it's okay, very much an album, no Fear of the Dark or The Trooper type standouts, might be a grower), Hellripper (black/speed metal from Scotland, very good), and Evil Invaders (thrash metal from Belgium, also very good).
Girl 1: Iris, very cute wee blonde from Dunfermline, near Edinburgh, just moved to the city recently for college. Young girl, 20ish, wearing all black and a black beret. Looked very cool. Sitting on a park bench, listening to headphones, and writing in a notebook.
I walked past her, thought "hello" and then went over, gestured for her to take off her headphones and sat down and said...
"Hi, I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I saw you there and I thought you looked very cute, so I had come and say hello"
She smiled and immediately proceeded to tell me loads of stuff about herself.
Turns out she’s in a band and was writing songs. She starts telling me about how she’s been reading that all the 70’s rock dudes were paedos and banging underage girls.
I said “oh dear, that doesn’t paint me in a very good light does it?”
Tells me that Jimmy Page hid a 14 yo girl in his closet when the cops turned up once.
I said “well that sounds like the kind of thing you’d do if you know what you’re doing”
Talked about that stuff for a bit. I asked if she’s heard about any of Steven Tyler from Aerosmith’s shenanigans. She had. They are legendary. He’s a very bad man.
She told me she was new to town, asked where I was from, did I live here.
So, conversation was all good, no lull, both of us very relaxed.
It started to rain a little, she said she needed to go in a bit, I said so did I and…
“hey, we should get a drink together sometime” and went to get my phone for her to give me her number.
She said she wasn’t going to give men her number because she had a boyfriend.
I said “oh no, I hate it when that happens” (Jokingly), “well, do you want to really annoy him?”
Another smile.
I asked how long they’d been together.
She replied “just a few months, he’s in the band I’m in. I’m just waiting for him to become a dick”
I said, “well what if I give you my number, when he starts being a dick, you can give me a call”
She liked that but she still didn’t give me ger number.
“Well, nice meeting you Iris, have a good day”
I felt the whole thing went really well, one of my best approaches so far.
Feel that the slightly indirect but direct opener worked well. Thought it builds a little tension to use the “I hope you don’t mind me saying this but…” My thinking is she could think something was wrong initially and when she finds out she’s cute, she’s 1. relived, and 2. pleased. So emotions go from slightly concerned and unsure of what this is all about to quite happy to hear she’s getting a nice compliment.
Not much eye contact as we sat side by side on bench.
Girl 2: Sarah, tall brunette metal chick, hot looking from South Wales (nice accent I thought), walking down the Royal Mile, smoking, wearing all black, skirt, low cut top, and biker jacket (standard metal chick outfit), I saw she had a cool chest tattoo. Conversation took place whilst walking together.
“Hi, I saw you tere and thought you looked really cool. I like your tattoo (and gestured to her chest)
Note: I’ve got 2 go-to conversation topics at the moment - Accents and tattoos - both seem good for getting to know you type questions.
“oh, thanks very much”
Introduced myself, shook hands - notice hand tattoo.
“Wow, that’s pretty cool too. I don’t have any tattoos. I’m far too scared of the pain.
“Well, you’re in the minority then, everyone seems to have them now”
Talked about that for a bit.
Noticed her accent. Asked about it. South Wales. So some chat about
She doesn’t live in Edinburgh and stays about 30 mins away in Fife. She’s just abut to go home now after being for a drink with friends.
Conversation lulled a little bit after that as I realised logistics were working against me.
I suggested we should go for a drink together sometime.
She said “I’m taken”
I said (jokingly) “oh no, this always happened to me. I see a cute girl and she’s taken”
She said “Cute? I’ve not been called cute for a while”
I said “oh yeah, definitely. Anyway, I’ll let you get on back to Fife, nice to meet you”
Thought I spoke a bit too quietly for a busy street and ran out of conversation a bit I thought.
Harder to chat when walking, especially down busy street with other people to negotiate. I’m a guy, so walk and talk multitasking isn’t one of my strengths.
Not any eye contact as walking side by side.
Girl 3: Unknown brunette, slightly shorter than me, very nice figure, great ass in tight jeans.
Street approach. I said “hi, I saw you there and thought you looked cute”
She was immediately uncomfortable, obviously didn’t speak English too well, and said “no.. no”
So Isaid, “okay then, bye”
Obviously foreign - but probably not from Eastern Europe, otherwise, she’d definitely have been into me!
Approach was bad, vibe was off.
2 reasons
I have a friend who uses the phrase LFB or ‘low fidelity babe’ to describe this phenomenon.
Feel pretty good about today. Getting more comfortable with direct opening. That’s definitely something I’m trying to work on.
Thought it was a shame about cute blonde, she was very fuckable and I was pretty impressed by her extensive knowledge of 1970’s rock n roll excess, especially for a young girl who couldn’t be much older than 20 if that.
She didn’t seem to think there was anything odd or weird about me, obviously twice her age, sitting down and trying to chat her up, so that was pretty good. I’m not worried about that anymore now. Pretty sure she’d have given me her number of it wasn’t for the boyfriend situation, and I think he’s real because of the details about him and the ‘waiting for him to be a dick’ comment.
Got my 2nd covid vaccination today after all that. So, not sure if I’m going to feel like shit tomorrow or not. Started to feel some side effects on the way home and thought "better get home before this stuff really kicks in." So, it's just like being back at university!
Anyway, I’ll go out if I feel okay.
Check it out. I did some approaches, and I didn't wuss out once!
I only did 3 because I've got some rules.
- I'm only approaching girls I actually want to have sex with
- I'm only approaching girls on their own
- I realise this limits my options a bit, but I want to hone my style before I complicate matters by having to keep the friend onside as well.
Anyway, on with the story.

- I had to wait for a bit to approach as she was watching street performer from the edge of a small crowd, so I waited until she moved away before moving in. So nerves. The first 2, I pretty much went straight in
- She wasn’t as pretty as I’d initially thought. Didn’t fancy her. So that threw me.
