What should I have said here

Just had coffee at one of my favorite places. After finishing on my way out, I paid at the cashier and asked the waitress how she's doing. She looked a bit sad and after a pause, said "Fine, but not as good as you who's going home now."

I gave her a sympathetic smile, paused for a second then said "That's why I'm paying you and not the other way around"

She smiled at that, but walking out I felt that was a lame answer and far too logical. I'm not trying to game the waitress because I'm a regular there, but I like to be flirty with the girls who work there (depending on their receptiveness of course). With this particular one we sometimes tease each other in small but friendly ways.

Thought I'll throw this out there to see what you guys come up with.

Dunno man, i probably would just try and chat to her rather than think of anything witty. Something like "yeah that sucks, what time you on til?"

Just get her chatting and then throw a bit of banter in there.

Women love someone who understands them, so this helps foster a connection more than a simple joke.

Yeah I regretted it right after I said it... I did give her an empathetic smile though so I hope that helped
